Animated media changes the atmosphere quickly, but it uses more decode memory and power than a still image. File size alone does not predict performance. Display size, frame rate, codec, and the number of simultaneous elements all matter.
Should you use GIF or video?
GIF is convenient for a short transparent sticker or a simple loop. For colorful full-screen motion, video is often much more efficient at similar visual quality because GIF compression and frame decoding are comparatively expensive.
Consider WebM or MP4 for a large moving background, and reserve GIF for small elements that specifically need its simple animation workflow or transparency.
Choose a practical resolution and frame rate
- Do not use a 4K source for a small decorative element.
- Clouds, rain, and slow light can often look natural at 24fps.
- For calm motion, going beyond 30fps may add more power use than visible benefit.
- Export close to the actual display size while preserving the original aspect ratio.

- Reduce the number of GIF and video elements playing at once.
